by VR Sreeraman on Jun 9 2007 6:24 PM

Former cricketer Maninder Singh was admitted to Shanti Mukund Hospital in East Delhi after he reportedly slashed his wrists in the wee hours of Saturday.

He is said to be out of danger, but is still in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"He had extensive injuries in both the wrists. In the right wrist, all the tendons, arteries and nerves were cut. There was no blood circulation or sensation or movement of the fingers of the right hand. In the left wrist, there were only tendon injuries. He is under observation,” said G.S. Mehta, doctor attending to Singh.

He is responding to stimuli and our questions but he is not fit for statement at present, Singh added.

Though allegations have surfaced Singh had allegedly tried to commit suicide, his family members maintained it was an accident.

Police said they received call at around 1 a.m. that Maninder slashed his wrists and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition by his neighbour in Mausam Vihar locality of Preet Vihar.

Police refused to say whether it was a suicide attempt or a case of accident.

"We have not spoken to the doctors yet. We will be able to reach at any conclusion only after knowing the nature of his injury," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ajay Chaudhary said.

The ex-Delhi cricketer was last month arrested for reportedly possessing cocaine. He was granted bail on May 23 by a city court on the grounds that the quantity of narcotics recovered from him was very small.

Around 1.5 grams of the contraband, with international market price of about Rs 5,000, was found in his possession at the time of arrest from his Gagan Apartments flat in Defence Enclave in Preet Vihar by the Narcotics Branch of Delhi Police.

A case was registered against Singh, who played for India in the 1980s before retiring in 1993, for allegedly consuming drugs.
