Man Dies from Novel Disease

A 73-year-old man from UAE died in Germany from infection of a novel disease coronavirus, says the World Health Organization.

WHO said in its latest disease outbreak update that the man was transferred from a hospital in Abu Dhabi to Munich March 19. Germany's Robert Koch Institute informed WHO of the new confirmed case.

ARDS is a lung condition where the patient suffers from sudden breathlessness, low blood oxygen levels and lung inflammation that could progress to respiratory failure.

WHO also said that the British patient in the family cluster reported on Feb 11 with travel history to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia prior to his illness has died.

To date, WHO has been informed of a global total of 17 confirmed cases of human infection with the novel coronavirus, including 11 deaths.

WHO continued to encourage all member states to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and to carefully review any unusual patterns.

According to a study the new coronavirus that has emerged in the Middle East is well-adapted to infecting humans but could potentially be treated with immunotherapy.

It said it was currently working with international experts and countries where cases have been reported to assess the situation and review recommendations for surveillance and monitoring.
