In Salora village near Nagpur, a villager Ratan burnt his wife Sunita Rathod (30) to death. Sunita, mother of four young daughters; Kajal (9), Meenal (7), Payal (5) and a yet to named nine-month-old baby girl died of severe burns early on Thursday. The couple was married for the last ten years.
The incident was allegedly a deadly consequence of frequent fights between the two over the issue of birth of girls —and no male child. Ratan increased verbal and physical harassment of Sunita after the birth of their fourth daughter. He kept blaming Sunita for the birth of four girls.According to sources, Ratan, a sworn alcoholic, entered into an altercation with Sunita on Wednesday morning. In a fit of anger, he allegedly doused Sunita with kerosene and set her afire.
However, sensing the gravity of the situation and presuming Sunita to be dead, Ratan took her to Amravati district hospital where she succumbed to her burns during the course of treatment, the next day. As Ratan had given an impression to the police that Sunita had immolated herself, they accordingly registered a case of suicide.
However, Sunita’s brother, Ramchandra Jadhav filed a complaint with the Kurha police station claiming that she had narrated Wednesday’s incident to him and that it was Ratan who poured kerosene on her and then set her ablaze.
Based on Ramchandra’s complaint, the police have booked Ratan for murder, though they are yet to arrest him.
