Jayne Brocklehurst, a dietitian for weight loss surgery clinic Gravitas, told the Daily Mail newspaper that for losing weight people needed to eat at least 500 calories less per day. For an average woman to maintain her existing weight she needs about 2,000 calories, while eating 1,500 calories can help lose weight.
It is crucial to look at overall lifestyle changes, eating fruit and veg, and having a balanced diet, she recommended.
