Majority of Americans Will Suffer from Heart Disease

A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that majority of Americans will suffer from heart disease at some point of their life. The study also found that just 7.5 percent of Americans are free of risk factors leading to heart disease.

"Our results raise the concern that a worsening cardiovascular risk profile in the population could potentially lead to increases in the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease," said lead researcher Dr. Earl S. Ford. "Potential increases in cardiovascular disease and diabetes could affect the nation's medical costs."

The researchers feel the main cause of this increased heart risk is obesity. The researchers examined data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys and specifically looked for preventive factors like no smoking, having low blood cholesterol, normal blood pressure, normal weight and no sign of diabetes.

In 1975 just 4.4 percent of those surveyed had these healthy factors, but the number increased to 10.4 percent in 1994. However it has again fallen to 7.5 percent in 2004.

The detailed report is published in the September 14 online edition of Circulation.
