Maharashtra State Government Wants to Impose a Ban on Sex Determination Sites

In order to curb female feticide, the Maharashtra State Government has written to the centre to ban websites that prescribe questionable tests to determine the sex of an unborn child. The State Government does not have the authority and the technology to block these websites. If the Centre gives a green signal, it will take just 7days to block these websites.

Citizens who were concerned about the misuse of such information brought this issue to the notice of State Public Health Secretary Bhushan Gagrani. One such website claims to ascertain the sex of the unborn child with the help of urine test. But this is just a myth.

Indian Court Upholds Ban on Pre-natal Sex Determination Test
In an order that would be welcomed by women rights activists, an Indian court has upheld the validity of PCPNDT, which bans medical tests to determine the gender of the foetus.

However Delhi based activist Sabu George said, "It is absurd to ban a website as these can reappear under another name. Therefore the Government should prohibit search engine companies from allowing certain word combinations." China has been successful to get a search engine to block certain key words. Indian Government should also look forward to achieve the same.
