Madras HC Says Uniani Docs can Perform Surgeries
The Madras high court has ruled that doctors who practice Indian medicine in siddha, ayurveda, homeopathy and unani can carry out surgeries.
Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla made this ruling while passing order on a contempt petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical Graduates Association (TNSMGA). He said that no legal action can be taken against such practitioners who wish to practice surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, anaesthesiology, ENT and ophthalmology.

The petition filed by TNSMGA also sought action against Director-General of Police Letika Saran, who it alleged had flouted orders of the High Court issues in April 2006.

Granting the petition, the court also ruled that the DGP cannot interfere in cases where the practitioner held a valid certificate from the TNSMGA.
