Madhya Pradesh Hospital to Probe Power Failure Deaths

A Madhya Pradesh hospital Sunday ordered an inquiry into four deaths allegedly due to power failure.

"We have ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the deaths that occurred Saturday evening during power failure," Hamidia Hospital superintendent S.C. Tiwari told IANS.

Earlier, the superintendent had denied the deaths were due to power cut, stating the patients were in a critical condition. Three women and a child died in ward no. 2 during the one-hour power cut.

"Power went off in the hospital premises around 6.45 p.m. but the generator started functioning around 7.30 p.m. The power supply was restored about 7.45 p.m. but during this period four patients succumbed," an official unwilling to be named said.

The junior doctors, who reportedly made death certificates in haste, said that the deaths occurred because of the power failure.

"There is no emergency light and the management has made no alternative arrangements despite being reminded several times," said Junior Doctors Association president Hemant Verma.
