An enlarged heart and a cardiac arrest at the tender age of 19 almost killed Mohan, but hopes came alive for him as he was admitted to a hospital where he has been surviving on an artificial heart for the past ten days. He is all set to receive a new heart. For the first time in the medical history of the state, surgery will be performed on a patient living with an artificial heart for ten days to replace it with a heart from a donor. Mohan is suffering from cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart is enlarged, since the last three months and was admitted to MS Ramaiah Medical College.
Dr Nagamallesh UM, senior consultant, heart failure and transplant cardiologist, said, "Soon after the cardiac arrest, a team of doctors attended on him and he was resuscitated. However, failing to revive his heart completely, the doctors placed him on artificial heart support."
