European researchers are reporting that the clue to why some alcoholics develop cancer lies in the genes.
The researchers found that two genes present in the body work to prevent development of mouth and throat cancers in alcohol drinkers. The absence of these genes increases the risk of developing these cancers.Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France looked at 9,000 people for this study and found that two variants of a gene called ADH were responsible for lowering the risk of developing mouth and throat cancer.
The details of the study are published in Nature Genetics.
