In this world of free flow of information - are there any moral issues involved in auctioning one’s virginity and what kind of value should one put on it?

22-year-old Natalie Dylan (name changed) a college girl from Sacramento CA is the latest to join the queue of girls who are willing to make a fortune by putting their virginity on sale, if the price is right. She was offered $250,000 but wants a million.

She says - "I don’t have a moral dilemma with it, we live in a capitalist society. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity?"

Dylan has a degree in ’Women’s Studies’, and wants to fund her studies to do a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and practice as a Psychologist.

She first approached E-bay for this auction but they turned her down. Now it is a Nevada brothel that has organized the auction for her to be done online. The date has not been announced.

Dylan concludes by saying – ’I understand some people may condemn me, but this is empowering. I’m using what I have to better myself."

This is not the first such instance on the Internet. In the year 2005 an 18 years model from Peru put up herself for sale to pay her family’s medical bill. She was offered $1.5 million but she turned it down as better sense prevailed on her.

There is another story doing the rounds from Italy. 20-year-old Italian model of reality show Big Brother called  Raffaella Fico also has decided like Dylan to put her virginity on sale for one million Euro or  US $1.5 million. She wants to pay for acting classes and also buy a home in Rome. Fico apparently is a devout catholic who prays every night and has preserved her virginity despite living in the fast lane.

Fico can’t wait to see who will pay the money  to taste her virginity she said to the Italian magazine Chi - " I can’t wait to see who’s going to pull out the money to have me."

After virginity what next? We already have website offering soft auction options to buy kidneys from poorer countries and getting the surgery done in countries that have no legal sanctions against such activities.

Internet has also brought new sanctions against conventional thinking and a new religious thoughts process and doctrine may soon emerge. Madonna the ’material girl’ is the girl of this new order, she has always challenged the conventional and ridiculed some of these beliefs. About virginity she is quoted to have said -  "It is difficult to believe in a religion that places such a high premium on chastity and virginity." She has further gone on to confess "I always thought of losing my virginity as a career move."

If all these sales become a regular affair we will soon see a new business model evolve on the net!! Imagine a poor country wanting to raise money by making  a law that every household would need to auction one girl from the family to raise money for the country!.

The net has indeed empowered people like Dylan. Empowerment in the past was used as a tool that helped a person to help others or themselves for betterment. Are Dylan’s and Fico’s interpretation of empowerment and betterment, the way the moral ethics are going to be of this century?

Our moral erosion has been on a slippery slope ever since the Television made an impact on our psyche. The advent of the World Wide Web has sealed it permanently and a new world order is emerging. No one has a clue on how to govern it.
