Lend a Helping Hand by Supporting Caregivers On This “National Family Caregiver Month”
Alzheimer disease is the most common form of dementia affecting millions of people around the world. Cognitive decline is the primary symptom of Alzheimer’s along with memory loss, loss of physical activity and behavioral inabilities. Therefore, a caregiver is a must for people with Alzheimer’s, who has to be with them 24/7 for taking care of all their needs.
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, more than 34 million family caregivers in the United States take care of an adult who is aging or has a disability. Therefore as a mark of appreciation, November is celebrated as the National Family Caregiver Month.

Caregivers dedicate their lives for taking care of a particular individual. They sacrifice many things during their course. Most people prefer to age at home instead of going to anold age home. So, caregivers play an important role in their lives to help them age at home independently.

This month it is important for people to recognize the hard work of a caregiver and appreciate their dedication by supporting them. Do you have a caregiver at home? Why not support them this whole month by doing these little things.

  • Give Breaks: Its tough for any person to work 24/7 without breaks. Therefore give them regular short breaks or weekly breaks. Let them visit their family members, attend any functions or parties. If you are little kinder, allow them to go on a vacation for few months.
  • Exercise & Yoga: Train your caregiver to do regular physical workouts. Get them involved in your early morning walks or Yoga. Make sure they stay healthy and brisk.
  • Health Check- Up: Make sure you consider them as a family member and schedule monthly master health checkup. Ensure they are healthy and take them to a doctor if they are sick. These little acts of kindness will really make them happy.
  • Sleep: Taking care of elderly people is always tough. They tend to wake up in the middle of night due to irregular sleep patterns or insomnia. Therefore, it is always necessary that their caregiver stays near them at that time. So, make sure that caregivers get their time of sleep every day. Eight hours of sleep is must for all.
