Southerners and inhabitants of Appalachia are least likely to be physically
active in their leisure hours, according to the report submitted by Center for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 29% of adults in these regions
reported of no physical activity or exercise besides their regular job. These countries
with lowest leisure-time inactivity show the highest prevalence of obesity and type-2
diabetes.
The CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System (BRFSS) asked the participants across 3,141 countries in US whether they
undertake any kind of physical activity or exercise outside their workplace. Alabama,
Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee were the states where
people were least active during their free time.
Director of the CDC's Division of Diabetes
Translation, Dr. Ann Albright said, "Physical activity is crucial to
managing diabetes and reducing serious complications of the disease. Moderate
intensity activities such as dancing or brisk walking, for just 150 minutes a
week, can significantly improve the health of people with diabetes or at high
risk for the disease."
