 Knee-Pain Relieved by Hip Exercises
Knee related injuries that runners suffer from may be relieved by hip-strengthening exercises developed by researchers at the University of Calgary in Canada.
The country faces over 3 million knee-related injuries each year. This study looks into an intensive hip-strengthening program to relieve knee pain. Dr. Reed Ferber, an Alberta Innovates — Health Solutions researcher who led his team, has developed a procedure of studying a person’s running gait to ascertain if the alignment of the hips is right. If the alignment is not correct, it can cause knee pain. Ferber and his team would then prescribe appropriate hip-strengthening exercises and after a period of three weeks, test the runner's gait again.

He has built the world's largest database of 3-D gait analysis.

Ferber claims, "What we've found is that by strengthening your hips, you can align your hips better with the knees. And you can reduce your pain… We've shown that strengthening those critical hip muscles helps runners restore a more consistent, predictable pattern of movement, reduce knee pain and stay on the roster for that next race."
