Kids' Dental Health Improved by Water Fluoridation

by Kathy Jones on Jun 4 2010 10:25 PM

Kids using non-fluoridated water have a higher rate of tooth decay than children relying on fluoridated supplies, says a new Kiwi study.

Dr Robin Whyman and two other dental experts from Hutt Valley District Health Board and Capital and Coast District Health Board analysed dental records of about 3000 children aged 2-12 on the Kapiti Coast.

They found that tooth decay is higher in non-fluoridated Paekakariki than in fluoridated Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae, reports Stuff.co.nz.

According to the analysis, obtained during 2009, the severity of decay was 32 per cent higher in Paekakariki children than in those from the other towns.

The study also found there were 13.3 per cent fewer children decay-free in Paekakariki compared with the other towns.
