 Kidney Donors Up by 400%
The number of live kidney donors in Northern Ireland has gone up by more than 400% over the last 5-years. This number has gone up from 7 in 2006-07 to 37 in 2010-11. The number of kidney transplants has shown a sharp increase (about 150%) within the first 2-months of this year itself, as compared to the same period last year.
Transplants have been successful in saving the lives of about 80 people. Belfast Telegraph and Transplant Support UK (TSUK) is urging people to sign up the NHS Organ Donor Register and help save more lives. Currently 300 people in Northern Ireland are waiting for an organ transplant.

In August TSUK has organized 'Westfield Health British Transplant Games' with the aim to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by people waiting for an organ transplant and also to encourage as many people as possible to sign up for organ donation. More than 800 people are expected to participate in this sports event.
