Chief Minister of Kerala, V S Achuthanandan has announced the implementation of a health policy, directed at helping the economically backward people of the state.
While at the inauguration of the 39th annual conference of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association, the chief minister said the objective of the government was to eliminate diseases, particularly epidemics at the grass-root level.
Chikungunya Affects Kerala's Healthcare Status
Kerala's status of having one of the best healthcare systems in India has received a severe blow in the past one year due to the outbreak of chikungunya viral fever in the state.

The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) is the premier body of the medical college doctors.
Achuthanandan stated that clean drinking water would be provided and cleanliness maintained in all hospitals. He added that modern facilities would be installed in all primary health centers, hospitals and medical colleges in the state.
The chief minister went on to say that the government would make it mandatory that the doctors who complete their studies in the state, serve in these places for a fixed period.
In her address, P K Sreemathy, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, said that the government was trying to provide better pay packages and working conditions to those in the medical sector. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association has been in the forefront demanding a hike in salary.
A detailed discussion on the strategy to further develop government medical colleges and constitute a Medical University were also held at the conference, organized at Kottayam.
