Kellogg's Recalls Cookies in Central America on Salmonella Fears

by VR Sreeraman on Jan 25 2009 10:46 AM

US food company Kellogg's recalled several brands of cookies containing peanut butter from Central America due to salmonella fears, the company said Friday in El Salvador.

"Kellogg Company announces the voluntary recall of some sandwich cookies containing peanut butter from the Austin and Keebler brands," as well as Famous Amos snack packets, "due to the possible contamination of these products with salmonella," a statement said.

Kellogg's does not directly distribute the products in Central America, said the company which has production plants in 19 countries and sells to 180 nations.

"These products probably arrived in Central America through an external distribution network," the statement said.

El Salvador's health ministry was checking that the products had been removed from sale, local authorities said.

An outbreak of salmonella earlier this month sickened at least 388 people across the United States, including 67 who required hospitalization.

The salmonella bacterium is spread most often by the consumption of food contaminated by animal fecal matter, according to health experts.
