Karnataka Police Urges CBSE to Include a Chapter on Drug Abuse in Syllabus

Karnataka police plans to submit a proposal to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) to include chapter on deleterious effects of drugs in school syllabus. DG&IGP Om Prakash said that the proposal was put forth during a meeting chaired by S K Patnaik, additional chief secretary (home department) on August 10. " We are looking at targeting students from Class VIII and create awareness on the ill-effects of drugs,'' said Prakash.

The meeting had an extensive agenda, but the discussion was limited to hearing grievances from NGOs and school authorities on how drugs and tobacco products are being sold outside institution premises without any fear of law.

Patnaik said, "There is drug abuse in the coastal cities of Mangaluru and Manipal, the education hubs of the region. We are here to take corrective measures, otherwise the situation will get out of hand. We want to take the bull by its horns."

Shreelatha Ullal, academic administrative officer, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, said that one of the students whom she had confronted told her not to force him reveal his supply source, and challenged her that he would get whatever quantity.

The students have said that catching the supplier legally was of no consequence as he would come out in a day by allegedly paying the police.

“We have written to Narcotics Control Bureau on increasing the number of narcotics drug detection kits, so that it can be supplied to all the police stations and coastal security police. At the same time, a few kind of drugs cannot be detected easily, hence, it has been asked to improve the kits. The district-level and regional-level co-ordination meeting on the drug menace will be held once in three months,” said the DGP.
