Karnataka Launches Women Safety Drive

The Karnataka Government has launched a safety drive by distributing pamphlets and introducing toll free numbers to be contacted in case of an emergency, following the increasing crime against women. Talking to reporters here on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok said that the campaign would benefit college students who use public transport.

"Today we are doing an awareness programme in Bangalore with our police commissioner, Jyotiprakash Mirji. This is especially for the college students who travel in the buses, so we are distributing book, 'Police with you' at the traffic lights. We are telling them about a toll number also and about the action government will take regarding the women issue," said Ashok.

Women also raised concerns about safety and urged for concentrated efforts to bring an end to harassment.

"We do not feel safe in the city right now. The only thing is that we as women need to step out with all guts to stop all the harassment on girls. Everyone should work on it, stop all this harassment, if we do it, we will be safe," said Divya, a college student.

The move is seen as a direct result of the nationwide anger after the recent brutal gang-rape and death of a 23-year-old medical student in New Delhi.
