Judge Permits Doctors to Carry Out Forced C-Section on Mentally Ill Woman

A judge in a British High Court has given doctors permission to perform a Caesarean operation on an expecting mother who is mentally ill.

Mr Justice Hayden admitted that though the order was 'draconian', he was satisfied that the woman was unable to make any reasoned evaluation and take a decision and the C-section was necessary to avoid any danger to the woman's life.

The woman is eight months pregnant and doctors from the Royal Free London NHS Trust revealed that there was no risk to life of the baby from the surgery.

"Doctors do not embark on this lightly. It occurs extremely rarely. It is one that the lawyers also take very seriously indeed. I am perfectly satisfied that at the moment this woman is not able to make any reasoned evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of a Caesarean section", the judge said.
