Japan Grants $1.3 Million to Guinea Mothers, Babies

by VR Sreeraman on Mar 16 2010 11:57 AM

Japan pledged Monday 1.3 million dollars (948,000 euros) for the UN's children's agency to improve health conditions for mothers and children in Guinea, the Japanese embassy said.

The funds handed to UNICEF will be used to buy thousands of birthing kits for mothers and respiratory masks and medicines for new-born babies, the embassy announced in Conakry.

Money will also be spent on staffing, anti-retroviral drugs and solar-powered refrigerators for HIV/AIDS prevention centres across the country, it said.

Around 17,000 new-born babies die each year in Guinea as a result of birth complications.

A further 62,000 do not make it to their fifth birthday due to acute diarrhoea, malaria or respiratory infections.
