J.P. Nadda Urges Every Hospital to Provide Cost-Effective, Best Treatment to Poor

Union Health Minister J P Nadda urged all health institutions across the country to adopt a model in which people from the economically weaker sections (EWS) receive the best treatment at a reasonable cost. The minister was addressing the 60th foundation day celebration of the historic Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in New Delhi on April 14. Nadda said, “Most of the Trust-run hospitals are in the names of good people and strong legacy. Some of them have lost sight of their goal and changed into profit-making organizations.”

Though a lot of hospitals in the country were established with an aim of providing equal treatment for the rich and the poor, the quality of treatment for the poor has diminished over time, said Naddda.

The minister lauded the services of SGRH for the poor. “I feel that the healthcare model developed during the years by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is unique and perhaps the only model that can be replicated elsewhere for the benefit of our population. Our ministry is studying this model," said Nadda urging all other medical institutions in the country to adopt the SGRH model.

Dr DS Rana, chairman, board of management, SGRH, said, “During the last financial year, 82,500 patients were admitted to the hospital, of which 11,100 was from economically weaker sections and they were treated free of cost.”
