Indian federal Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has called upon the private sector to come forward to provide specialized healthcare services at subsidized rates to the people living in neglected pockets of the country and to the poor in general.
Inaugurating new office of the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in the national capital New Delhi Wednesday, he wanted the private institutions accredited to the Board to work with public hospitals in selected areas besides helping strengthen healthcare delivery in rural India.Conceding that the government health infrastructure now available in rural areas was inadequate in many parts of the country, Ramadoss said the onus was on the Board to work on such private institutions to share the burden the health front.
He expressed satisfaction that the Board had taken special measures to increase the expertise of the medical graduates in the family medicine discipline.
“The family physician is likely to be more successful in providing comprehensive services to our communities, specially in rural areas. Moreover to practice holistic medicine, as is the case with general practice, the physician should understand well the social, cultural and economic conditions of the family,” the minister said.
He suggested that postgraduate medical education focus on areas like emergency medical and surgical needs of rural population, public health in the coming days, apart from family medicine.
Calling for standardized postgraduate medical education and examinations across the country, Ramadoss said, “There is a need to evolve and develop new student friendly examination methodologies, which test the competency and skills of students more objectively. Modern information technologies like internet, interactive CDs, teleconferencing etc. can play a useful role in improving the quality of postgraduate medical education in our country as well, specially when our country is one of the world leader in software computer technologies.”
