A team of doctors successfully transplanted kidney & pancreas, alongside liver transplantation on different patients at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana.
For the first time in Western India, a single centre has performed kidney & pancreas transplant and liver transplant simultaneously on different patients. This was the second kidney and pancreas transplant conducted in the state of Maharashtra and also marked the 50th liver transplant by Sahyadri Hospitals.

After a 41 year old accident victim was declared brain dead, the ZTCC Pune gave the necessary permissions to harvest his organs which saved lives of 3 patients. The victim’s kidney and pancreas were transplanted to a 27 year old IT professional from Chennai who was suffering from renal failure and severe diabetes which had damaged his kidney.

The liver was transplanted to a 62 year old patient from Baramati who was suffering from chronic liver disease. Both these transplant surgeries began at 8 am at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana and were completed by 5 pm.

Dr. Bipin Vibhute, multi-organ transplant & hepatobiliary surgeon, Sahyadri Hospitals said, “Diabetes is one of the most common problems in India and can affect various organs. Replacing kidney and pancreas is one of the most useful solution, however, pancreas transplant are still rare in India. There is an immediate need to promote pancreas transplant as it eliminates problems by optimally controlling sugar levels and by protecting the transplanted kidney from the adverse effects of diabetes. Additionally, it will also help reverse the effects of diabetes on other systems including peripheral neuropathy thus, protecting the limbs.”

Dr Anil Vaidya, pancreas transplant surgeon said, “The 27 year old kidney and pancreas recipient developed kidney failure about 2 years ago requiring dialysis 3 times a week. However, the patient is doing well after the transplant and is completely relieved of his insulin intake and dialysis. We are constantly monitoring his progress."

Simultaneous Kidney-Pancreas transplant is an operation to replace kidney and pancreas at the same time in a patient who has kidney failure and also suffers from diabetes, needing very high insulin dose to control sugars.
