by Savitha C Muppala on Jul 1 2008 5:15 PM

A doctor hailing from India and practicing in United States is facing a two year ban and a fine of $81,000 for committing a serious medical error. Dr Santusht Perera had operated on a healthy lung of a sixty year old cancer patient in September 2000.

Dr Santusht Perera had wrongly cut off a portion from the right lung of a cancer patient instead of operating on the tumor in the left lung during the surgery which took place in Bergen County hospital. State documents convey that the patient was operated upon the lower and middle lobe of the right lung.

After committing the error, the doctor tried to cover his tracks by changing the records. According to the medical board, this was serious negligence on the part of Perera and the board deemed that his medical license be suspended for 2 years.
