India has reported over 90 percent decline in polio cases in 2010 as compared to 2009, according to Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
The Ministry also said that the country is rapidly moving towards the target of achieving polio eradication in the near future.

According to figures released by the Ministry, 42 cases were reported in 2010, while 741 cases were reported in 2009. Only one case has been reported this year so far.

"The last eight months have seen the lowest number of polio cases during the high polio transmission season of any year since polio eradication efforts started in India," it said in a statement.

The number of affected districts declined to 17 in 2010 from 56 in 2009 and 90 in 2008.
