Inappropriate Use of E-cigarettes can be Fatal, Warns Study

Queensland Health issues warning about the dangers of 'e-cigarettes' in a bid to curb its usage.

The organisation seized more than 70 packages at Brisbane Airport in past one month.

The warning says that e-cigarettes, advertised on the Internet as a way to quit smoking, contain vials of liquid nicotine, which can be fatal if used inappropriately.

Queensland Health's Sophie Dwyer said that liquid nicotine was classed as a Schedule 7 dangerous poison under the Australian Standard for Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons.

"The e-cigarettes are being misleadingly marketed as a safe alternative to cigarettes and as an aid in withdrawal from tobacco smoking but this is not the case," The Courier Mail quoted Dwyer as saying.

"There is no evidence e-cigarettes are effective in helping people to quit smoking," she added.
