by Rajshri on Feb 5 2010 5:25 PM

A new study from Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University has found that drinking hibiscus tea may help reduce blood pressure in people who are at high risk of developing the condition.

The study involved 65 patients aged between 30 and 70 years, who had pre or mild hypertension. The subjects were randomly assigned to drink three 240 mL servings of hibiscus tea per day or a placebo drink for six weeks.

The researchers led by Dr Diane McKay,  report that patients who consumed hibiscus tea had a reduction of 7.2 mm Hg in their systolic blood pressure as compared to 1.3 mm Hg in the placebo group.

The details of the study are published in The Journal of Nutrition.
