Football has been the most popular subject on Twitter in 2013, with 7 out of 10 spikes caused by banter about matches.

Manchester United's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in March featured top on the list that also featured three England internationals.

According to Daily Star, the second hot subject on the 140-character microblogging site has been revellers seeing in the new year, while 26-year-old tennis ace Andy Murray winning Wimbledon final came third.

Boyband One Direction fetched three of the top five most retweeted messages, thanks to their army of hysterical fans.

However, the world's most popular message was Glee star Lea Michele, 27, thanking her fans for their support following the death of her co-star and partner Cory Monteith that garnered 408,000 retweets, the report added.
