Humans in the bird flu net: suspects in Azerbaijan

In a new development in Azerbaijan, 10 people suspected of carrying the H5N1 bird flu virus have been placed under observation reveals the Ministry of Health.

Daikyand settlement in Salyan Rayon in the eastern part of the country is the location of all the suspected cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Friday.

In Indonesia two children had died of bird flu, bringing to 22 the total number of death from the disease in the country. This report was received thereafter.

Two deaths that spurred the investigation were of a 17-year-old girl, who died on Feb. 23 and the second women who died on March 3 following rapidly progressive acute pneumonia - a typical characteristic of H5N1 infection.

Following these deaths a daily house-to-house investigation was initiated, conducted by four teams of hospital staff, searching for persons in the settlement with respiratory symptoms or fever.

The search resulted in hospitalization of eight persons for observation. The search is continuing.

Local health officials collected samples from patients and will ship them in next few weeks to the WHO laboratory. All patients under investigation received antiviral drugs.
