Honesty Takes the Back Seat, Lying is Now Endemic!

by VR Sreeraman on Aug 4 2007 3:05 PM

Honesty may be the best policy, but hardly anyone believes in telling the truth, a new survey of 2,000 has found .

The survey was carried out by Royal and Sun Alliance, found that 62 per cent of the people questioned had been dishonest - to friends, family, neighbours and colleagues.

The most common reason for fibbing, as it turns out, happens to be love and sex, with a fifth saying that they had lied cover up having an affair.

The poll found that while 41 per cent have lied to friends, 43 per cent do so while dealing with neighbours.

The trend is also seen in the workplace, but on greater proportions.

"Whether it's adding a new skill to your CV, or bumping up your salary when asked at interview, it is almost regarded as part of the game," the Daily Mail quoted Paul Nicholson, as saying.

"The point at which a white lie becomes a fully-fledged lie is different for each individual," he added.

However, the poll also found that men and women lie for different reasons - the former to make life easier for them, and the latter to "avoid causing others worry".
