HIV/AIDS Turns Out As a Social Stigma Endemic Across Different Parts of Societies

Young people are more prone to HIV/AIDS infection and awareness among youth should be a priority area, said T. Kailash Ditya, Joint Director of Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS).

Speaking on ‘HIV/AIDS and Social Work’ organized at Maulana Azad National Urdu University Daitya said, “HIV/AIDS is more than a disease. It is a social stigma endemic across different parts of the societies.”

He also informed students about the use of antiretroviral therapy in controlling and strengthening the immune system of HIV infected people. Social workers should have skills to build rapport with clients using resource mobilization and behavioral modification of people at high risk.

Dr. Md Shahid Raza, Associate Professor, Department of Social work, MANUU said, “Social work intervention at micro, mid and macro levels would aid not just in building awareness but also in challenging stigma against patients.”

“Field Work is crucial component in this regard. It would orient students about practical aspects related to different problems that patients face,” he added.

Students in middle and high school are required to attend six and four hours of HIV/AIDS prevention classes respectively, to prevent new cases.
