In a shocking incident it has emerged that staff at the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule District Hospital denied treatment to a HIV-positive pregnant woman. The 28-year-old woman was forced to deliver her baby outside the gate of the hospital.
"The doctors and other employees refused to treat the woman, as she was HIV-positive. They asked the family to take her somewhere else," said Manoj Mishra, a social activist, who informed the district administration. "The staff at the district hospital knew the couple very well, as both have gone through the tests in this hospital and have been found HIV-positive."

The Acquired immune deficiency syndrome is brought about by the deadly human immunodeficiency virus. In the USA alone an estimate of 120,000 - 160,000 women are HIV- infected.

District Chief Medical Officer Liaqat Ali said both the mother and the baby were doing fine and added, "An inquiry has been initiated into the incident. It is yet to be established that treatment was denied because the patient was HIV-positive."
