The high court has rejected the legal bid to allow women to consume second set of abortion pills at home. As of now, women who want an abortion within nine weeks of pregnancy need to visit the abortion centre on two occasions to take a set of pills each time. As per the norm, once the first set of pills is consumed, the second set should follow within 24 to 28 hours after the first set.
The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) feels that women should be allowed to choose where they wish to complete there treatment, that is take the second set of pills. Many women wish to take the second set of pills in the comfort of their homes so as to avoid the discomfort of cramps or bleeds enroute.
It may be good to take cues from practices at France, Sweden and U.S where women are given both sets of pills with appropriate instructions. Women usually take the second set of pills at home.
