Here’s a New Way to Detect Contaminated Foods in Your Fridge
Do you think your foods are safe when kept in a fridge? It may not be so. Food items can easily perish even if stored in cold temperatures though their shelf-life may vary.
Often, foods get contaminated inside the fridge and most of us find it difficult to determine whether it can be consumed or thrown out.

Now, scientists at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have developed a device that can help find out if the foods stored in the fridge have been contaminated or not.

The device uses laser technology to check bacterial contamination on the foods. It scans the foods for 30 times in a second to see if there are any bacteria. The light gets dispersed when it falls on the food, creating a random pattern known as "laser speckle." But the bacteria on the surface of food changes the speckle by causing scattering as well.

The device has so far detected the presence of E.Coli and Bacillus on chicken breasts. Scientists hope to target Campylobacter and Salmonella, which cause severe cases of food poisoning. If successful the device that can be easily fitted inside the fridge will be launched into the market within a year.
