Heart Surgery for a Premature Baby
Eleana Hastings was born prematurely during the 36th week of pregnancy with a birth weight of just 3lb 5oz.

Born with a rare heart problem, she is the smallest baby to undergo open heart surgery in Britain. The surgery was an absolute necessity to save her life.

A routine scan during 22 weeks of pregnancy showed that the baby had a severe heart condition and would need an open heart surgery to save her life. Soon after birth, she was operated at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital .

The surgery took about four hours, doctors closed the hole in her heart and reconstructed her lung arteries. The baby is said to be recovering well at the hospital and her parents are looking forward to taking her home soon.
