Living a healthy lifestyle in your middle age can go a long way in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new report published in the BMJ Clinical Evidence.

According to Dr Tom Russ and Professor John Starr, both of whom work at the University of Edinburgh, maintaining a trim physique, keeping blood pressure under control and lowering cholesterol could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by as much as 20 percent.

“Blood pressure, cholesterol and obesity need to be adequately controlled in midlife for dementia to be prevented. Exercise is to be recommended across all age groups”, the duo wrote in their report, adding that various other studies have identified a number of pathological changes long before the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms.

So, the best way to avoid dementia late in life is to eat a balanced diet and get good exercise.
