Highlights:
A 57-year-old man’s family bravely decided to donate his heart, liver and kidneys after being pronounced brain dead on Saturday at Manipal Hospital in Jaipur. The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) distributed the organs. At Manipal Hospital in Jaipur, one kidney got transplanted to a 37-year-old woman. The other kidney was sent to SMS Medical College. His heart was transported via the green corridor to the Eternal Hospital in Jaipur, and the liver got delivered to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. It was the second cadaver transplant performed at Manipal Hospitals in Jaipur in the previous 15 days.

“The patient was a resident of Sikar and was admitted to a local hospital after a major accident. He was later referred to Manipal Hospitals, Jaipur on August 27, 2022, where he was put on a ventilator and primary treatment was done to save his life. Unfortunately, after a few hours, he was declared brain dead even after sustained efforts by the team of doctors. After we counselled the family about the patient’s condition, they took the big step of donating his heart, liver, and both kidneys. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the donor’s family for their decision to support the noble cause of organ donation,” said Dr Vaibhav Vaishnav, HOD, Critical Care Department, Manipal Hospital, Jaipur.

The 57-year-old army man had served the Indian army for 17 years and even after his death, he served the nation and saved countless lives. We salute the courage of the family in taking this big decision of donating his organs. We are also thankful to the police department of Jaipur for their support in creating a green corridor which has saved the lives of other people. Patients requiring transplants and the organs available in India are far apart. Annually, 1.8 lakh patients experience renal failure, yet only 10,000 kidney transplants are performed. Approximately 2,500 to 30,000 liver transplants are carried out in India each year. Like this, only 200 people who have heart failure out of thousands receive a transplant.
