International Yoga Day – How It Started

This year 21st June 2017 marks the 3rd anniversary of International Yoga Day which was formally declared by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on 11th December 2014.
It is a matter of great pride and honor to India that the suggestion by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to declare 21st June as International Yoga Day was accepted and announced within three months, the first time ever, that a proposal has been implemented within 90 days. This date was suggested as it happens to be the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere regions, as well as a day of great significance for people in many parts of the world.

It is sincerely hoped that by creating awareness about yoga and its numerous benefits on our physical, as well as mental health, and encouraging more and more people to take up the practice of yoga, the overall health and well-being of the global population would improve.

During his address to the UN General Assembly Narendra Modi stated that “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise, but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

International Yoga Day – 2017

This year, nearly 180 countries including United Nations (UN) organizations, and international and regional organizations all over the globe including the USA, Canada, China, Japan and many parts of Europe, are celebrating International Yoga Day by organizing events in popular locations, university campuses.The various events would include yoga competitions, with prominent personalities speaking about the positive effects of yoga, in an attempt to spread the message of this ancient practice in a manner appropriate to their culture and priorities.

The International Yoga Day hopes to spread its message far and wide and make the practice of yoga a global phenomenon.

In an address to the nation over the radio, the Prime Minister has urged all Indian families to upload pictures of members of all three generations of the family, performing yoga on the Narendra Modi App. "This (Yoga) is India's prescription of wellness to the world," he further added.

Noted yoga guru Baba Ramdev has also suggested that yoga could be made compulsory in educational institutions to ensure all round holistic development of the children and for making them into global citizens.

Already several countries have kick-started celebrations with several yoga enthusiasts performing asanas at various yoga events that being organized across the world.

Some of the notable events organized on this occasion worldwide include the following:
  • The UN Headquarters at New York was illuminated with the word ‘Yoga’ on this occasion
  • China is organizing several yoga events all over the country including the Great Wall of China. Yoga has caught the imagination of the Chinese over the past few years.
  • In France practitioners of yoga gathered at the Eiffel Tower to perform yoga asanas
  • In Washington USA, several persons gathered in front of the National Mall to perform yoga.
  • Celebrations are also being held in Japan, Singapore, Cambodia, Pakistan, Hungary and Israel to name a few.

  • To promote good lifestyle choices for better health and giving up unhealthy practices
  • Letting people know their rights to good health and healthy lifestyle and to achieve the highest standards of health through the practice of yoga
