Does Porn Addiction Affect Relationships?

A survey has brought about the suggestion that porn addiction is negatively impacting intimacy! But is it true? Read on.

In a study carried out by Cosmopolitan, 68 sex relationship experts were questioned regarding the influence of porn on relationships. Eighty six per cent of these believed that watching porn did exert a negative influence on relationships, while 90 per cent revealed that there was an increase in relationship problems in recent years due to excessive exposure to porn. However, the basis of these claims was not too evident!

Not all experts believe in the above findings due to a number of reasons. First of all, there is a marked difference between questioning actual people concerned and questioning “experts”. Secondly, there seems to be an absence of a comparative data and, lastly, the questions themselves were questionable when seen from the scientific perspective. There is a lack of specificity as the study fails to lend details of the damage caused to intimacy by overt porn exposure.

Everybody believes that watching porn is harmful but no one seems to really know why! Most people who come to therapists have a relationship issue for which seeking help is a good idea! Experts must treat porn ‘addiction’ as a symptom of an underlying relationship issue and not the cause.
