Achieving Equality Through Equity on Women's Day 2023

Achieving Equality Through Equity on Women’s Day 2023

International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration of women’s historical, cultural, and political achievements. The goal in 2023 is to fight gender inequality

Highlights:
  • Women account for only 22% of all artificial intelligence workers worldwide. A global analysis of 133 AI systems from various businesses discovered that 44.2% have gender prejudice
  • A poll of women journalists from 125 countries revealed that 73% have experienced online violence because of their employment
  • Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls require innovation and technical progress, as well as education in the digital era
Women have contributed innumerable contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live, from the early days of computers to the contemporary age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Their achievements have come against all odds, in a field that has traditionally neither embraced nor respected them.

Gender Disparity in Technology

Today, a persistent gender gap in internet access prevents women from realizing the full potential of technology. Their underrepresentation in STEM education and careers continues to be a significant impediment to their engagement in tech design and governance. And the constant danger of online gender-based violence, combined with a lack of legal remedy, pulls them out of the digital venues they do occupy all too frequently.
Meanwhile, digital technology is opening up new avenues for the worldwide empowerment of women, girls, and other oppressed populations. The digital age represents an extraordinary potential to remove all types of inequity and inequality, from gender-responsive digital learning to tech-facilitated sexual and reproductive healthcare.

On March 8, governments, activists, and the commercial sector continue their efforts to make the digital world safer, more inclusive, and equal. Faced with a slew of global challenges, we have an opportunity to build a brighter future - not only for women and girls but for all humankind and all species on Earth.

What is the Embrace Equity Campaign

Let us all #EmbraceEquity on International Women's Day and beyond. Equity is not just a nice-to-have; it’s a requirement. Gender fairness must be ingrained in the DNA of every civilization.

It is also crucial to understand the distinction between equity and equality. The goal of the #EmbraceEquity campaign topic for International Women’s Day 2023 is to have people talking about why equal opportunities are not enough. Individuals come from varied backgrounds, therefore meaningful inclusion and belonging necessitate equal action.

We can all embrace equity wholeheartedly. It is not simply what we say. It is not just something we talk about. It is something we must consider, understand, cherish, and accept. It is what we believe in wholeheartedly. Equity entails developing a more inclusive world.

Within our spheres of influence, every one of us can actively promote and embrace equity. We can all challenge gender stereotypes, speak out against discrimination, call out bias, and seek inclusiveness.

Change is driven by collective activism. We can all embrace equity, from grassroots action to broad-scale movement. Building gender equity isn’t only about women waging the good fight. Allies are critical for women’s social, economic, cultural, and political growth.

Everyone everywhere can contribute. All IWD activities are legal. That is why IWD is so inclusive. We can all work together to effect positive change. Being included and having a sense of belonging feel good. As we accept equity, we also embrace diversity and inclusion.

We value equity to foster harmony and unity, as well as to assist, promote success for all. The objective is equality, and equity is the means to get there. We can achieve equality through the process of equity.
