World Cancer Day (WCD) is celebrated each year on the 4th of February. World Cancer Day 2013 provides a platform to raise our voices, opinions and knowledge collectively to dispel the myths and misconceptions regarding cancer under the theme "Cancer - Did you know?"

Common myths surrounding cancer include the following –

• Cancer is merely a health issue
• It is a disease of the elderly and the wealthy and is mostly seen in developed countries
• Cancer is a 'death sentence'
• Cancer is 'my fate'

World Cancer Day (WCD) is the collective effort of the United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), the government of various nations and other major health organizations to bring the world together to combat cancer, to demystify this grave disease and provide information regarding its treatment and prevention to the general public.

WCD was started in Geneva in 1933 and is an initiative guided by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), which is a premier cancer- fighting organization. This organization  now enjoys the support of 120 countries and 400 member organizations across the globe including prominent cancer societies, patient groups, treatment centers, and research institutes.

Cancer is among the leading causes of death all over the world. In the year 2008 alone, it accounted for 7.6 million deaths, which is around 13% of all deaths.

Each year, there is a renewed effort to ease the burden of cancer. The main aim is to increase awareness regarding the disease by educating the public regarding the symptoms of cancer and how early diagnosis can cure the disease in many cases.

Educating people regarding the importance of exercise, healthy diet and regular monitoring forms the main focus of the events on World Cancer Day! The word is spread by organizing camps, rallies and other public programs.

The threat from cancer is very real! It is a grave illness no doubt, but it is much more than a serious disease as its chronic, debilitating and painful nature can take its toll on not just the patient but also on the family. The psychological and financial aspects need to be addressed too if one were to counter cancer in totality!
