Cell phones are now an integral part of our life and the numbers listed on it are vital links that sustain our modern existence. But, neither the list of numbers nor the names are designed to make sense to anybody other than to us.

The list may carry an endless assortment of acquaintances, colleagues or important social contacts. But very often there is nothing in it that indicates if the numbers belong to our family members or close friends.

What happens, then, during an emergency, such as an accident or a sudden illness?

A paramedic, who frequently visited scenes of accidents and sites of other medical emergencies, observed that the medical staff often had access to the mobile phone on the affected person, but were confused about whom to contact.

This inspired him to come up with the idea that a nationally recognized name would help Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff, which sowed the seed for the ‘In Case of Emergency’ (ICE) campaign. All they needed to do was to quickly contact the right person listed in the mobile phone under ‘ICE’.

What should you do?

‘ICE’ is a method of contacting the right person(s) during an emergency situation. In the present times most people carry cell phones, and hence it would only be prudent to employ these devices to tackle an emergency.

All one needs to do is to list the number(s) of a contact person(s), who should be notified during an emergency, under the label ‘ICE’. This may be a family member or a close friend.

If there are more than one contact numbers they may be listed as ICE 1, ICE 2, ICE 3 and so on.

Right Steps

ICE is a great idea that is bound to impact our lives. It may be just that we are not sure as to when or where it is meant to happen!

As the first step towards spreading awareness about the concept let us list a few numbers belonging to our family members or close friends as ‘ICE’.

Let us also ensure that those around us are  informed about this innovative idea  which is ‘waiting in the wings’ to make a difference in all our lives.
