Government Doctors in Nigeria Call Off Strike

Doctors at government hospitals in Nigeria’s main city agreed Monday to end a week-old pay strike after authorities met their demands, a spokesman for the movement said Monday.

"We have decided to call off the strike with effect from 8:00 am (0700 GMT) on Tuesday," Adedamola Dada told journalists.

Nigerian Doctors On Pay Strike
A pay strike by doctors at government hospitals at Nigeria's main city entered a third day Wednesday but the authorities accused the strikers of blackmail .

"We strongly hope that the government will show sincerity and ensure that every agreement is sincerely implemented," Dada said.

Doctors under the umbrella of the Lagos State Medical Guild said the strike, launched last week, was over wages, outdated facilities and ill-treatment of their members.

The Lagos State government accused the strikers of "blackmail".

Orissa to Impose ESMA on Doctors Going on Strike
The State Government of Orissa has decided to impose Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against the government doctors threatening to go on strike from Sunday.

Strike leader Ibrahim Olaifa alleged that government agents had launched "vicious attacks" on some doctors who supported the strike.

Lagos State government spokesman Segun Ayobolu told AFP that all the demands of the doctors have been met and that their strike was "sheer blackmail."
