Glasgow Maternity Hospital Battling Lethal Bug

Glasgow’s Princess Royal Maternity (PRM) could be battling an infection spread after it revealed that a baby died due to a bloodstream infection while another is currently being treated for the infection.

Eight other babies are also suffering from the infection, caused by serratia marcescens, and are currently being monitored by the hospital staff. Serratia marcescens is a bacterium found in the gut and is usually not harmful for humans.

Birth defects are abnormalities, which occur before the birth of the baby and can be caused due to genetic, environmental and other unknown reasons.

However it could cause a serious infection among people who are very vulnerable to infection such as premature babies. The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) revealed that it has set up an outbreak control team to limit the infection with lead infection control consultant Dr Craig Williams saying that his team is looking into finding whether there is a connection between all the cases.

“The eight babies who are colonized are being nursed together as a cohort in one part of the neonatal unit totally separately from other patients. We are investigating the cases at the PRM to establish if there is any link between the cases”, Dr Williams said.
