Genetic Link for ADHD

Korean researchers have discovered a mutant gene which almost triples the probability that a child suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This genetic link can be helpful for physicians while treating patients with ADHD. It also paves the way for new medicines to treat ADHD. On several occasions ADHD is dismissed as a result of poor parenting, so this finding will also help remove some stigma for parents of children who suffer from ADHD.

Past studies have shown that the condition runs in families. Now it has been found that a just single 'letter' change in the genetic code of the gene GIT1 (it is linked to a brain protein that helps balance excitability and inhibition) increases a child's chances of having the condition by 2.7 times. Reduced expression of GIT1 can lead to ADHD.
