Genes Determine the Age of Onset of Menstruation
The genetic makeup of girls determines at which age they begin menstruation.
Scientists from UK's Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) studied about 26,000 women to determine whether menarche tends to run in the families or it is influenced by environmental factors. Every participant had at least one relative who was also a part of the study. Eventually it was ruled out that the age when a woman had her first periods was linked with her relatives. In 57% cases genetic predisposition was found to be a major factor which determined the age of menarche.

The findings of the study indicate that genetic factors have major influence on the age British women begin menstruating and this could also have an impact on risk of breast cancer. This study will be published in the May edition of Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology.
