Gattex, a New Medicine for Short Bowel Syndrome Has Been Approved by the FDA.

Gattex (teduglutide) has received the approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a good form of treatment for nutritional problems caused by short bowel syndrome, which occurs after the small and/or large intestine is surgically removed.

This injection is used to help improve intestinal absorption and is administered once a day. Somatropin and glutamine, two other drugs used to treat short bowel disorder have also been approved by the FDA.

An algae extract could prove an effective remedy to short bowel syndrome, a condition characterized by diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, malabsorption, and progressive malnutrition.

Nausea, headache, abdominal pain and upper respiratory tract infection could be some of the common side effects. This drug was evaluated in two clinical studies and two extension studies.

This medicine provides nutrition for people whose intestines have been surgically removed since extensive removal of the intestines leads to poor absorption of liquids.
