Free Medical Treatment for All Acid Attack Victims in India: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India has passed an order to all private hospitals across the country to provide free treatment, including medicines and corrective surgeries, to acid attack victims.
The Social Justice Bench of Justices Madan B //Lokur and Uday U Lalit asked all state governments and Union Territories to take up the matter with the private hospitals and ensure that acid attack victims are attended to immediately and adequately.

A certificate will be issued by the hospital that an acid attack victim approached first and will be used for claiming future benefits. The court observed that governments should provide Rs. 3 lakh as financial relief to acid attack victims.

The sale of acid over the counter is banned across the country and all states and union territories should notify it as a scheduled substance to stop its unregulated sale.

The country has a record of 309 acid attack incidents being reported from across the country in 2014. The average number of such cases was almost four times more than the cases witnessed during the preceding three years.
